I have discovered David Sedaris
Part of the reason I was away from my blog over the weekend was I was, well, living my life in that place they call the outside, as Robin says. This included a very fun trip to the bowling alley with M and a yummy dinner at that Route 1 bastion of tacky Chinese decor and good food, the Kowloon. The best part? Dinner last night leads to leftover lunch today.
But I was also reading. I picked up a book by an author I'd never read before, Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim, by David Sedaris. David bears a lot of resemblance to another favorite author of mine, Augusten Burroughs -- he's gay, he's had substance abuse problems and a colorful childhood, he tells stories about his life in vivid, almost scarily accurate detail. The stories about his Greek dad butchering a platitude in the native tongue made me laugh. So did the story about conning his friends playing strip poker so he could keep his clothes on (and his attraction to other guys under wraps). It's a good, quick read, and I'd highly recommend it.
I love discovering new authors. Now on to Me Talk Pretty One Day, his other big book.
