Snow, Davio's and chemo
OK, first things first: That storm Friday was one of the craziest things I ever experienced. I looked out the window at one point and it was total white. Like a torrential downpour, except snow, not rain, as M says. Driving to get him after they really hadn't cleaned up yet was abso-fucking-lutely terrifying. At one point, I was driving on Edgell Road in Framingham, and a dude was plowing his driveway and I thought he was going to cut out in front of me. I TAPPED my brakes, and I skidded across the road. Thank goodness no one was coming the other way or I would have been broadsided. I was shaking by the time I got to Ashland to get M, but the roads were down to the pavement there and just wet. So was 495. We went home so he could snowblow, then we went to check out that new Mojo's BBQ. Good stuff, although as others have said before me, it ain't cheap. M got the brisket (ewwww), pulled pork, french fries and beans, while I got the quarter chicken, garlic mashed potatoes and steamed broccoli. As an aside, we were in there at about 9:30 p.m., and a youngish couple came in with a little girl who looked to be about 2. She was exhausted and whining and running around the restaurant. Instead of TAKING HER OUT OF THERE or going home and having their meal delivered, the mom took the kid out to sit in the car while the hubby ordered. Ummm, hello? It was fricking freezing Friday night. Take your kid home, put her to bed, and then come back and eat. Dumbasses.
M's boss took the entire office to Davio's last night for dinner by stretch Hummer. It was something. The liquor flowed quite freely, as bossman gave M $50 to go buy booze. We went to Krappy's and bought beer, wine and VO (the latter being M's favorite). I had a baby arugula salad with shaved cheese and lemon olive oil, butternut squash ravioli with gorgonzola mashed potatoes and asparagus and pumpkin cheesecake with hazelnut ice cream for dessert. Soooo good. I actually drank a little too -- if you know me, I usually stick with Diet Coke thanks to the loverly fact that Zoloft magnifies the effects of alcohol. But since I wasn't driving, I had a glass of pino bianco in the limo and two glasses of merlot at the restaurant. M drank a lot of the VO and several beers. He's downstairs sleeping it off right now.
Tomorrow is M's first chemo appt. I think this one will be the worst, since we don't know what to expect or how he'll tolerate it. His mom and me both took the day off to go sit with him while he has an IV stuck in his arm. From what I understand, he's going to be in a big room full of cancer patients, so I hope his mom doesn't flip out when she sees that. After this, he will go once a month for six months. I plan to keep him company in the afternoon and get some wrapping and baking done. I've sort of prewrapped my gifts by putting the appropriate ones in boxes, which I can easily wrap. We're invited to a Christmas party on the 18th, so I'm trying to gather up my energy to go to Tar-get and get a Yankee swap gift. Good sales, yo.
And as for on the volunteer front, I had one of the best visits yet with my mentee on Thursday. We went to the local Paper Store, where some DJs from the local radio station were broadcasting, and everything in the store was 20 percent off. She started opening up to me about her depression, etc., to which I can completely relate. It's kind of sad that we've bonded over our shared weakness, but I'll take it.
One more thing: Went to the eye doc yesterday, and my prescription didn't go up for the first time in like five years. Woo woo!
