The thrill of victory, the agony of falling short on live TV
So in case you hadn't heard, a rescue crew had to go in after magician David Blaine underwater, just short of his goal of holding his breath for 9 minutes. On live TV. The story I link to includes a video of the rescue. Man, to get that close to breaking a record and then have to be rescued. That's got to stink.
To bring it all back to me, I remember doing the Walk for Hunger with M about six or seven years ago. I had finished before, but this year, I got to 16 miles in (it's a 20-mile walk around Boston to support Project Bread) and I just...ran out of gas. Couldn't do it. Legs wouldn't work. I was so pissed at myself. But my mom said to me, "Christine, at least you know your limits."
Someone's got t0 have a similar talk with this Blaine fellow. It runs counterintuitive to what our culture tells us -- push the limits, blaze new trails and all that happy crappy -- but my god, he could have drowned in there. He's already got liver damage. Stupidhead.
