Hanging in a chow line?
For the past few nights, M and I have been checking out the reruns of Good Times on TV Land. That was a really good show -- typical Norman Lear envelope-pushing, making you think about social issues while you laugh. A lot of backstage drama, too. Both actors who played the parents wound up leaving the show.
Anyhoo, apparently there is some controversy over one of the lyrics. Is the singer saying "hanging and a-jivin'," "hanging in a chow line" or "hanging in a jury"? The vote is split. Chappelle did a sketch called "I Know Black People," where he asked a bunch of people what the lyric was. Chappelle himself claims it's "hanging in a chow line." But that doesn't make any sense. O, mystery of the '70s, won't you reveal yourself?
