Our review of Tejano Loco
There's been a lot of chatter on Jody's blog about this new BBQ place called Tejano Loco in Ayer. M loves BBQ, and while I don't eat a lot of meat, I enjoy the smokiness and the sauce. So, not really wanting to cook, we jumped in the car and went over there last night.
It's a storefront, similar to the now-defunct (well, now in a different wrapper) Mojo's. The owner calls himself the Crazy Texan and says he's been smoking meat since he was 12 when he was living in Texas. The menu is typical BBQ fare -- pulled pork and chicken, brisket, ribs, etc. They also had daily specials. The owner, who seemed like a nice enough guy, came out and told us he was adding Tex-Mex menu selections soon. They've been there since May.
I got the chicken sandwich with chipolte mayo and fries. M got the pulled pork with beans, fries and cornbread. Total cost, with no drinks: $17. A bit pricey (and Mojo's-esque). Since we got our food 10 minutes to closing, we took it home with us rather than sit at the four counter seats in the place and chow down. The smell was driving me nuts all the way home.
My sandwich was cooked beautifully and on a nice thick kaiser bun with pickles and onions. The fries were excellent. M says his pulled pork was very good but could have used more seasoning -- a bit bland. His beans were bland as well, but he too liked his fries.
Our overall assessment: Value is mezza mezza, food was good to very good, location is OK (a bit far for takeout). You may want to check it out.
